Outdoor First Aid

The Course

 The Outdoor First Aid course is designed for individuals who work or spend time in outdoor environments, including outdoor instructors, expedition leaders, teachers, Duke of Edinburgh supervisors, and adventure activity providers.  


This qualification meets the Outdoor First Aid Band 3 requirements set by the Institute for Outdoor Learning and also satisfies the first aid requirements for the expedition section of   the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels).  


The course provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to respond effectively to medical emergencies in remote or outdoor environments, where professional help may not be immediately available.  


Participants will gain the confidence to manage incidents, treat injuries, and provide lifesaving care in outdoor settings.   

Course Duration

The Outdoor First Aid course requires a minimum of 16 hours of training, delivered over at least two days.  


The course is usually delivered over one full day; however Expert Response Training offers flexible scheduling to meet organisational needs.  


Training can be delivered across multiple sessions provided that: 

  • The course must be completed within nine weeks  
  • Each training session must last a minimum of two hours   

What You Will Learn

 

Our Outdoor First Aid training syllabus covers a wide range of injuries and medical emergencies that may occur in outdoor environments, including:  

  • Understanding Outdoor First Aid principles  
  • Incident management and scene safety  
  • Conducting a primary survey  
  • Carrying out a secondary assessment  
  • Monitoring a casualty  
  • Summoning assistance in remote environments
  • Major illnesses  
  • Bones, joint, and muscle injuries  
  • Head and spinal injuries  
  • Chest and abdominal injuries  
  • Burns and scalds  
  • Wounds and bleeding  
  • Bites and stings  
  • Anaphylaxis and severe allergic reactions  
  • Extreme heat and cold exposure  
  • Disorders of respiration  
  • Eye injuries  
  • Poisoning  
  • Hypovolaemic shock  
  • Resuscitation (CPR)  
  • Using first aid equipment in outdoor settings 


The course includes hands-on practical training and realistic scenarios, helping learners develop the confidence and skills needed to respond effectively in remote or challenging environments.  

Assessment & Certification

 Participants are assessed throughout the course using a combination of:  

  • Practical demonstrations  
  • Scenario-based assessments  
  • Oral questioning  
  • Written assessment  


Upon successful completion, learners will receive an Outdoor First Aid certificate, which is valid for three years. After the three-year period, learners must complete the full course again to renew their qualification.   

Course Requirements

  • Maximum class size: 12 learners
  • Minimum age: 16 years 


 Learners under the age of 16 cannot take responsibility for First Aid duties in the workplace. Employers must ensure that individuals assigned first aid responsibilities are suitable for the role.
