Paediatric First Aid

The Course

 The Paediatric First Aid course is designed for individuals who work with or care for infants and young children, including nursery staff, childminders, teachers, teaching assistants, and childcare providers. 


This qualification meets the first aid training requirements set by Ofsted and the Department for Education’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework.  


The course provides learners with the knowledge, practical skills, and confidence to respond to a wide range of paediatric first aid emergencies, helping to ensure the safety and wellbeing of children in their care.   

Course Duration

 The Paediatric First Aid course has a Total Qualification Time (TQT) of 15 hours, including:


  • At least 12 Guided Learning Hours (GLH) delivered in the classroom  
  • Independent pre-course and post-course study  


The course is usually delivered over two full days; however Expert Response Training offers flexible scheduling to meet organisational needs.  


Training can be delivered across multiple sessions provided that:  


  • The course is completed within six weeks of the start date  
  • Each training session lasts a minimum of two hour   

What You Will Learn

Our Paediatric First Aid training syllabus covers a wide range of medical emergencies and injuries affecting babies and young children, including:  

  • The role and responsibilities of a Paediatric First Aider  
  • Conducting a primary survey  
  • CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) for infants and children  
  • Safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)  
  • Managing wounds, bleeding, and shock  
  • Allergic reactions and anaphylaxis  
  • Head, neck, and back injuries  
  • Responding to seizures  
  • Managing choking emergencies  
  • Treatment of minor injuries
  • Placing a casualty in the recovery position  
  • Fractures  
  • Managing foreign bodies  
  • Diabetic emergencies  
  • Asthma attacks  
  • Meningitis  
  • Febrile convulsions  
  • Effects of extreme cold and heat  
  • Electrical incidents  


The course includes extensive hands-on practical training, ensuring learners gain the confidence and competence needed to respond effectively in emergency situations involving children.  

Assessment & Certification

 Learners are assessed throughout the course using a combination of practical demonstration and written assessment. Participants must successfully complete both the practical and written assessments to achieve the qualification. 


Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Paediatric First Aid certificate, which is valid for three years.  


Annual refresher training is recommended to maintain knowledge and confidence.  


After three years, learners must retake the full course to renew their qualification.   

Course Requirements

  • Maximum class size: 12 learners
  • Minimum age: 16 years 


Certificates remain valid for 3 years from date shown on the certificate.
